Ground Orchid

I have just finished recolouring my small painting of flowers, the white and the pink ground orchid. It took around 4 days to complete the recolouring works.

Title: Ground Orchid

Size: 20.9 cm × 14.6 cm

Media: Watercolour on paper

Artist: Charles Roring

Orchid flowers do not wilt easily. The flower plant is beautiful and stands firm on the ground. In West Papua, this terrestrial orchid grows on hills or slopes whose ground is mostly composed of limestone with very thin layer of soil. This limestone hill is often dry and hot. It is an unfavorable environment for plants to grow well. However, the ground orchid Spathoglottis plicata could grow well in that harsh environment.

In human life, this is the kind of characteristics that a leader should have, i.e. having a love for nature or environment; having a strong connection with her grassroot; able to adapt with the challenging condition.

Well, back to the discussion about artwork. This is a watercolour painting whose sketch was drawn years ago, in 2015. I left it in my sketchbook for more than 10 years. Now I have completed the colouring works and it is ready to be framed. I will decorate the wall of my house with this painting.

Pink Orchid Flowers

This is the watercolor painting of orchid flowers that I saw in Raja Ampat. At first, I didn't know its species name. Now, after reading information from the internet, I could determine its genus, It is Vanda orchid. I made this drawing in 16 December 2014. After that I left in my sketchbook for years. In April 2026, I opened my sketchbook again and added blue back ground as well as some other modification to the artwork. It is now in a frame that is hanging on the wall of my house now.

I recoloured the painting and made some additional lines on the artwork. The following painting is the updated version of the vanda orchid.

There are a lot of flowers in the jungle of West Papua. Some of them are Glory Vine (Faradaya Splendida), Terrestrial Orchids (Spathoglottis plicata), and Cananga or Ylang-ylang.
When I guide tourists on a trekking trip in the jungle of Arfak mountains or Klasow valley, I often see flowers in tall trees. Birds and butterflies like to gather in those trees to eat or collect the nectar.
Besides making the watercolor artwork above, I also made the vector graphic version of the pink orchids using Inkscape. Creating a vector illustration is not as intuitive as drawing on a paper or painting on a canvas. However, the advantages of having a transparent background and the ability to export to png file in any size are two things which digital printing companies such as teepublic or redbubble need from our artworks.
As a matter of fact, it was my first experience using Inkscape. Now, it is available in my Tropical Art store on various products from T-shirts, to mugs and spiral notebook.

Terrestrial Orchid from the jungle of Papua

This is my drawing of a terrestrial orchid flower which I saw when I was hiking with some tourists in the jungle near Manokwari city. In nature they grow in places where there is enough sunlight such as along the forest edges, the logging road or the sides of rives.

Pink Ground Orchid
I saw them in three colors: red, pink and white. They were very common in the area whose soil does not have a lot of humus and mostly contains limestones. The height of this Spathoglottis plicata flower plant is around 1 meter. It is taller in area that receives lower sunlight. Perhaps, the plant tries to get more sunlight by growing taller.
If you like the art, you can buy it online printed on various products by clicking the above drawing.
In addition to this flower, you can also see other artworks offered in the website.
