Watercolour painting of Vanda Orchid

This is watercolour painting of Vanda Orchid that I recoloured a few days ago. It is only a small (14.8 cm × 21 cm) painting that I created from my Winsor & Newton Wire-O A5 sketchbook.

The sketch was made in 16 December 2014. After creating the sketch and applying some colour, I left it for years. Now I added blue as the background colour and made some modification to the plant. I put it in a light frame (20 cm ×25 cm). It is now hanging on the wall of my house.

Ground Orchid

I have just finished recolouring my small painting of flowers, the white and the pink ground orchid. It took around 4 days to complete the recolouring works.

Orchid flowers do not wilt easily. The flower plant is beautiful and stands firm on the ground. In West Papua, this terrestrial orchid grows on hills or slopes whose ground is mostly composed of limestone with very thin layer of soil. This limestone hill is often dry and hot. It is an unfavorable environment for plants to grow well. However, the ground orchid Spathoglottis plicata could grow well in that harsh environment.

In human life, this is the kind of characteristics that a leader should have, i.e. having a love for nature or environment; having a strong connection with her grassroot; able to adapt with the challenging condition.

Well, back to the discussion about artwork. This is a watercolour painting whose sketch was drawn years ago, in 2015. I left it in my sketchbook for more than 10 years. Now I have completed the colouring works and it is ready to be framed. I will decorate the wall of my house with this painting.

Azure Kingfisher

Azure Kingfisher (Ceyx Azureus) is a small bird that lives in the lowland forest of eastern region of Indonesia from West Papua to Waigeo, Aru and Halmahera islands. In e-bird, the spread of this kingfisher reaches the north and eastern region of Australia. This bird is often seen near a calm water of a river. It eats small fish and insects helping to control their population in the ecosystem of rainforest and at the same time providing natural fertilizer to plants from the bird's poop.

Now the drawing can be bought from Teepublic  in the form of products such as mugs, t-shirt, hoodies, bags, shorts, socks and hats with the image of this Azure Kingfisher. You could buy them by clicking the following picture or text link.

The following sketch is the Azure Kingfisher that I saw in Klasow valley. It looks similar to Papuan Dwarf Kingfisher. I made this sketch to study basic form for drawing the bird. I used a small pocket sized book.

Papuan Dwarf Kingfisher has got scale patterns on top of it head.

Hornbill - The Symbol of Love

I often guide tourists on birding tour in West Papua and North Sulawesi. One of the birds that we see in the forest is hornbill. In Tangkoko Nature Reserve, there are 2 species that we can see, i.e. Knobbed Hornbill and Sulawesi Dwarf Hornbill.

The following picture is my watercolour painting of a couple of Blyth's hornbills. These birds can be found in tropical rainforest of West Papua and Pacific islands. They play important roles in the ecosystem of forest. They are seed dispersers.

Title: Hornbill - The Symbol of Love

Media: Watercolour on paper

Artist: Charles Roring

Size: 12.9 cm × 17.9 cm

Local people in vogelkop region of West Papua call the bird as the symbol of love. They often see hornbills fly as a couple. However, if one of them dies, the other hornbill that is still alive will continue to live and fly alone in the forest for the rest of his or her life.

I also have uploaded the modified picture of the above drawing to teepublic at this hornbill link. Now anyone can buy t-shirts, hoodies, bags, mugs, shorts and socks with this couple of hornbill, printed on them.

There is vector illustration about hornbill flying that I have uploaded in teepublic. Please, press this Hornbill - The Symbol true Love if you are interested in buying the available products.
